Resy Booking Path
Merging Financial Access with Culinary Experiences
Overview
In 2024, I played a pivotal role in overseeing the intricate collaboration between the technology teams of Resy and American Express, focusing on the integration of a seamless reservation path experience across both Resy's mobile application and its web browser platform. This integration was a strategic move that followed American Express's acquisition of Resy, a significant milestone that allowed for enhanced synergies between the two entities. The collaboration was designed to leverage American Express's extensive marketing capabilities, enabling acquisition marketing teams to deliver a diverse array of card advertisements precisely targeted at the restaurant space. This approach not only improved user engagement by effectively placing banners, and also ensuring that potential customers receive relevant offers tailored to their needs.
Design and Marketing
The journey of integration was meticulously crafted to mirror the user experience of purchasing a Delta flight, which is known for its simplicity and efficiency. This design choice was intentional, as it aimed to create a user-friendly interface that would facilitate a streamlined reservation process, making it as intuitive as possible for users. The initial rollout of this product was strategically focused on Gold and Platinum cardholders, which are among the highest revenue generating credit cards. By concentrating on specific banner placements, we were able to maximize engagement rates and conversions, ensuring that the features and benefits were communicated effectively to a receptive audience. This targeted strategy not only enhanced the user experience but also positioned American Express as a leader in providing exclusive offers that resonate with its premium card members.
American Express gained ownership of several critical components that are essential to the functionality and overall success of the Resy integration. These components include:
Marketing Banner: The visually engaging advertisements that promote cardholder benefits and exclusive offers, designed to catch the eye of restaurant patrons.
Functionality: The underlying technology that supports the reservation process, ensuring that it operates smoothly and efficiently.
Design: The aesthetic elements that create a cohesive brand experience across the platform, maintaining brand integrity and user appeal.
Copy Offer: The persuasive text that outlines the benefits of using the American Express card for reservations, tailored to resonate with the target audience.
API Request and Response: The technical specifications that govern how data is exchanged between the Resy platform and American Express systems, ensuring seamless communication.
Banner Logic: The rules and algorithms that determine when and how marketing banners are displayed to users, optimizing visibility and engagement.
Landing Page: The dedicated web page that users are directed to upon clicking a marketing banner, designed to convert interest into action.
Acquisition Intake Form: The form that captures user information and facilitates the onboarding process for new cardholders.
Tagging: The system used to track user interactions and gather data for analysis, enabling continuous improvement of the product and marketing strategy.
Outcome
The successful integration and well-executed marketing strategy led to remarkable business outcomes, generating an impressive $20.4 million in annual revenue from the acquisitions of Platinum and Gold cardholders. This financial success represented the culmination of strategic planning, execution, and the effective alignment of technology and marketing efforts. Additionally, the initiative resulted in the addition of 24,000 net new accounts, significantly expanding American Express's customer base and reinforcing its position in the competitive landscape of financial services and chartering into the restaurant booking landscape. These outcomes validated the integration efforts but also set a precedent for future collaborations and innovations within the company.
