Implementing the Winning Variant Across Three Major Cards

Overview

In 2024, I played a pivotal role in releasing a revolutionary American Express' feature that provides dynamic welcome offers, which is integrated with the Platinum, Blue Cash Everyday, and Blue Cash Preferred cards. This initiative aimed to provide clearer information to potential customers, thereby fostering a more informed decision-making process as they navigate their options for credit card applications.

Objectives

The primary objectives of this project were multifaceted and centered around improving the overall customer experience.

  • First and foremost, we sought to reduce any negative impact on customers by ensuring that the messaging was straightforward and free of ambiguity. By clarifying the terms and conditions associated with the welcome offers, we aimed to build trust and confidence among prospective applicants.

  • Additionally, we wanted to entice potential customers with the promise of a compelling offer that would not only meet their financial needs but also enhance their loyalty to the American Express brand.

  • Lastly, creating a dynamic point value system that would leverage existing credit data to provide applicants with personalized offers based on their credit. This system was designed to surprise and delight eligible applicants by offering them tailored offers. By utilizing data-driven insights, we aimed to present offers that resonated with certain targeted audiences thereby increasing the likelihood of conversion.

A/B/C Testing Phase

Before the full rollout of the welcome offer feature, a comprehensive A/B/C testing phase was conducted. This involved experimenting with different messaging variants to determine which wording would yield the highest levels of interaction and engagement from potential applicants. The testing process was meticulous and data-driven, allowing us to gather valuable insights into customer behavior and preferences. Ultimately, Variant B emerged as the most effective option. This variant featured the messaging "know if you're approved for this card with no impact to your credit score," which resonated well with our target audience and encouraged more applicants to proceed with starting an application.

Outcome

Once we identified the winning variant, it was fully implemented across the application journeys for the Platinum, Blue Cash Everyday, and Blue Cash Preferred cards. The financial implications of this initiative were significant, with an estimated impact of $1.9 billion in annual billed business. This figure not only reflects the immediate financial benefits of the dynamic welcome offers and enhanced messaging but also underscores the long-term value of improved customer trust and satisfaction.
