Sentinel Regulations for Morgan Stanley
Preventing Reward Exploitation with Proactive Controls
Overview
I played a crucial role in managing the integration of advanced gaming control systems within Morgan Stanley's application systems, a project that demanded careful planning and execution. The feature is still operational today, effectively identifying "gamers" applying for a customer account and ensuring they are fully informed about the application terms. A key element of this system is its ability to 1) identify and 2) transparently inform churning or "gamer" applicants (people opening and closing multiple credit card accounts to maximize rewards and bonuses. Gamers are driven to earn sign-up bonuses and rewards points, then close the accounts before incurring fees or interest, trying to "game" the system) that they will not receive the advertised welcome offer if they decide to proceed with their application. This transparency is essential for maintaining trust and integrity in the financial services industry, especially in a sector where consumer protection is crucial.
Outcome
This significant achievement not only demonstrated American Express' strong commitment to regulatory compliance but also reinforced the company's dedication to offering fair and transparent services to its customers. By implementing these enhanced gaming control systems, we created a more informed application process, ultimately leading to higher customer satisfaction. Furthermore, this initiative has had a considerable financial impact, helping the company save an impressive 44 million dollars annually. These savings result from reduced compliance risks, fewer customer disputes, and a more efficient application processing system.
Overall, this project reflects American Express' proactive approach to tackling the complexities of modern financial regulations while simultaneously prioritizing the needs and rights of customers.
