Transforming Eligibility with Real-Time Bank Data

Overview

In my role, I played a pivotal part in the successful release of a bank-based underwriting capability that was developed collaboratively with a dedicated team of scrum masters. This initiative was particularly innovative as it involved leveraging Yodlee, a powerful financial data aggregation platform, to seamlessly link business bank accounts to various applications. The core of this automated solution is its ability to utilize comprehensive bank data to accurately assess the eligibility of applicants, with a special emphasis on those who are traditionally credit-invisible — individuals who may not have a robust credit history or have been overlooked by conventional credit scoring systems.

The solution employed a meticulous analysis of both total and recurring credits within applicants' bank accounts, providing deep insights into their cash flow and income patterns. The limitations of traditional credit metrics, such as FICO scores, became apparent during this process where we understood that these tools can fail to capture the real-time liquidity of applicants, which is crucial for understanding their financial health. By refining our predictive models and decision logic, we enabled a data-driven underwriting strategy that aligns more closely with real-world applicant behavior which ultimately supports smarter, more equitable lending decisions.

Outcome

The integration of the Yodlee feature, along with a streamlined document upload process, was a significant enhancement to the card application workflow. This integration had a profound impact on: - Higher approval rates - Accurate credit line assignments - Higher incremental spending - Higher overall customer service experiences. - 46,500 new accounts, which translated into an impressive $478 million in billed business.

The success of this undertaking was not solely due to the technological advancements but also the collaborative effort of twenty different business units. Each unit played a crucial role throughout the various stages of the project, including discovery, development, testing, and validation of this innovative feature. Their collective expertise and input were invaluable, as they ensured that the solution was robust, user-friendly, and aligned with the needs of our diverse customer base. The collaborative nature of this project exemplifies how cross-functional teamwork can lead to transformative outcomes in product development.
